This book is silly in the particular way paranormal romance tends to be silly, but it's not bad, and it features, in addition to the usual young, beautiful, and innocent heroine, another female character who is older, kind of ugly, and, nevertheless, sexual. Oh, and this latter character is also a werewolf.

Beyond Heaving Bosoms: The Smart Bitches' Guide to Romance Novels by Sarah Wendell and Candy Tan
This was a Mother's Day present from Ted and Frances. It's pretty awesome.

The Magicians by Lev Grossman
Having thoroughly enjoyed Codex, I eagerly awaited Grossman's next novel, and I was not disappointed. This is an intelligent treat for anyone who grew up reading fantasy.

Castle by Robert Lennon
To say that I "recommend" this book is not quite right. It is very weird and very disturbing and BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO ANIMALS (Well, bad things happen to pretty much everyone in this book, but ALSO TO ANIMALS.) But, man, that Lennon fellow can write, and his protagonist is one of literature's finer unreliable narrators.

Remainder by Tom McCarthy
Castle put me in mind of this book, which is almost as weird, almost as disturbing, and just as well-written.
